Application Process

Substrate preparation

The substrate must be clean, free of dust, oil or grease, loose material and other contaminants. Care must be taken to fill all surface imperfections such as cracks or holes with suitable materials. Porous substrates (e.g. concrete, microcement, etc.) should be first primed with the acrylic primer FLEX-PRIMER, while non-porous substrates (e.g. old tile layers etc.) should be primed with ISOMAT SUPERGRUND. DUROCRET-TERRAZZO should be applied after the primer has dried completely.

Application of the decorative flooring

DUROCRET-TERRAZZO is slowly added to a container with clean water under continuous stirring until a mixture of the desired workability is obtained. For a colored floor screed, it is recommended that the desired ISOMAT DECO-COLOR pigment amount be dissolved in the mixing water. Then, ISOMAT NATURAL COLORED STONES are added to DUROCRET-TERRAZZO at the recommended dosage. Mixing is carried out with a low-speed mixer until uniform distribution in the mortar is achieved.

The mixture is applied onto the prepared surface with a metal trowel to a thickness of 1-2 cm. Next, the surface is leveled and smoothed with a metal screed bar. On the fresh DUROCRET-TERRAZZO surface (within 15-20 minutes from its leveling) the special acrylic curing agent for fresh concrete ISOCURE-A is applied.

After 24 to 48 hours, depending on the weather conditions, the decorative floor is mechanically treated, polished and finished off with either a terrazzo grinding and polishing machine or an electric palm sander followed by sandpaper (usually selected for small-scale projects, details, or difficult-to-reach surfaces).

Then, the surface should be thoroughly cleaned of dust with a high-suction vacuum cleaner. Minor holes, pores, etc. created in the DUROCRET-TERRAZZO surface due to mechanical treatment are filled with WHITE 52,5 special binder based on white cement. If DUROCRET-TERRAZZO is to be colored, then WHITE 52,5 should be colored in the same color as DUROCRET-TERRAZZO.

Application of varnish

Two-three days after the completion of the application, provided that the surface is dry, the decorative terrazzo floor screed should be protected with VARNISH-PU 2K transparent, UV-stable, polyurethane solvent-based varnish (gloss or satin) or VARNISH-PU 1K one-component, transparent, UV-stable, polyurethane solvent-free (satin-matt), with at least 2 layers.

These varnishes may darken the decorative surface. If this is not desired, it is recommended that the surface be impregnated with VS-W acrylic water-based varnish or VARNISH-PU 2KW polyurethane water-based varnish prior to application of VARNISH-PU 2K or VARNISH-PU 1K, respectively.

For safe flooring applications in food and beverage handling and processing facilities, the use of the certified, transparent, two-component, UV-stable, polyurethane water-based varnish with satin-matt finish VARNISH-PU 2KW can also be used as a final protective layer.
